Demi Lovato Tearfully Debuts Powerful New Ballad 'Anyone' At 2020 Grammys

Demi Lovato kicked off her musical comeback at the 2020 Grammys on Sunday night (January 26) with a new single titled "Anyone," which was inspired by her struggle with sobriety.

Introduced by Greta Gerwig during the ceremony, which took place at Los Angeles’ Staples Center, the pop star’s performance was simple and straight to the point, but it was emotional from the very beginning. At the top of the set, she stumbled and turned to her piano player to restart the song as tears started falling down her face. Dressed in a gorgeous white ball gown, she found her groove and it was one emotional journey. “I tried to talk to my piano/ I tried to talk to my guitar/ I tried to talk to my imagination/ Confided in to alcohol/ I tried and tried and tried more," she opened the song. However, the hook to the track was even more hard-hitting as she repeated: "I feel stupid when I sing/ Nobody’s listening to me."

"I almost listen back and hear these lyrics as a cry for help," Lovato said in an interview prior to Music's Biggest Night. "And you kind of listen back to it and you kind of think, 'How did nobody listen to this song and think, 'Let’s help this girl?' I was recording it in a state of mind where I felt I was okay, but clearly I wasn’t. I even listen back to it and I’m like, ‘Gosh, I wish I could go back in time and help that version of myself.'"

Lovato has yet to win any Grammys, but the singer was previously nominated for her 2017 album, Confident, as well as her 2019 Christina Aguilera collaboration, "Fall in Line.”

TMZ previously reported that the ballad was written just days before her near-fatal overdose, which took place in 2018. Additionally, she made a vow to herself to select the song as the first track she would perform if she ever received the opportunity to hit the stage again. The song will reportedly be apart of her upcoming LP, which will drop in the first half of 2020, as per the celebrity gossip outlet.

Expect more eyes on Lovato when she appears at Super Bowl LIV to perform the National Anthem at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium next Sunday, with Jennifer Lopez and Shakira serving halftime show duties.
