A small privately-owned aircraft had to make a dramatic emergency belly landing at Falcon Field in Mesa on Sunday afternoon after suffering problems with the landing gear, according to Mesa Fire and Medical officials.
According to a statement released by Cpt. Mike Castillo, the aircraft was a North American T6 military-style aircraft.
Two people were on board the privately-owned plane. Both individuals on board the flight were able to safely get off of the ex-Navy plane. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
The Mesa Fire and Medical Department stated that the aircraft experienced hydraulic failure with its landing gear.
The plane was told by the tower to do multiple "fly bys" to burn off any excess fuel before making the belly landing. The excess fuel could have caused an unwanted explosion.
A video released by officials with the Mesa Fire and Medical Department on October 11th shows sparks flying from the bottom of the plane as the belly of the aircraft made contact with the asphalt and safely landed at the Mesa airport.
