A man was shot outside Merritt Square Mall by a Brevard County Sheriff's Office deputy Tuesday when he allegedly attacked with a large metal fence post, Sheriff Wayne Ivey said. Deputies responded to the mall after security officers called to report the man was acting strangely, Ivey said. They confronted the man in the parking lot and found him armed with the fence post. The suspect started swinging the metal post at deputies and one opened fire, hitting and injuring the man, Ivey said. A medical helicopter responded to the scene and flew the injured suspect to the hospital where he was being treated for his wounds.
