CLEARWATER -- A well-known charity is on the ground in the Tampa Bay area, helping survivors of Hurricanes Helene and Milton.
The Salvation Army, which operates year round in the region, is supplementing its local outreach with support teams from New York and Canada. Its focus is providing hot meals to survivors, according to Major Ted Morris with the Clearwater command. As many as a hundred volunteers are working through the areas affected by the hurricanes, with about three dozen in the immediate Hillsborough-Pinellas-Pasco region.
Major Morris says the teams from out of state will be here at least through the end of the week, with other teams rotated in. Morris expects the expanded presence to run another couple of weeks.
The Salvation Army's local operations will continue after out-of-state support teams have returned home, and Morris expects to be serving survivors of the two hurricanes for some time.
