The sailor kissing a nurse to celebrate the end of World War Two in an iconic photo has died. George Mendonsa has died in Middletown, Rhode Island. The incredible shot of Mendonsa kissing Greta Zimmer Friedman in New York City's Times Square was taken in August of 1945, after it was announced that Japan had surrendered.
And no, he wasn’t her boyfriend at the time. Just two people caught up in a moment. Mendonsa and Friedman reportedly stayed friends for years – though she died in 2016. As for Mendonsa, he was married to Sharon Molleur for 70 years and is survived by her.
