Melbourne Officer Saves Local Woman

A Melbourne police officer broke down the door of a burning apartment on Thursday to save the life of a woman trapped in the fire.

The officer is a school resource officer who was on his way to Melbourne High School.

Officials said the woman was in bed and woke up coughing. Melbourne Police Officer Robert Smith saw the fire from a distance, and hurried there. “He had a fire extinguisher. He was able to break a window, and that got the fire down a little for him to be able to kick in the door,” said Melbourne Police Chief David Gillespie.

He was checked out at a hospital and went back to work. Friends say the victim will be in the hospital for a few days.
